Direct answer: take the current displayed carton price and divide it by the confirmed number of packs in that carton. If a live listing states that one carton contains 10 packs, the arithmetic equivalent is carton price ÷ 10. Calculate a per-cigarette equivalent only when the same listing also states the number of cigarettes in each pack. These derived figures are comparison notes—not separate single-pack offers, not the checkout total and not evidence about health risk.
Keep three price ideas separate
A clear calculation starts by naming the number being used. “Price” can describe three different things on the same shopping journey:
| Number | What it means | What it does not mean |
|---|---|---|
| Displayed sale-unit price | The current amount shown for the selected carton or other listed unit | It does not automatically include a delivery charge that depends on the destination |
| Derived per-pack equivalent | The displayed carton amount divided by its confirmed pack count | It is not an offer to sell one pack separately |
| Checkout total | The amount shown after the selected quantity, delivery and applicable charges are known | It should not be copied back into a product record as the base carton price |
That distinction is useful beyond arithmetic. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission says price information should be clear and accurate and explains how a minimum total price should account for unavoidable or pre-selected charges. Its Unit Pricing Code guidance separately lists cigarettes and other tobacco products among the products that do not have to display a statutory unit price. This worksheet is therefore a voluntary reading aid, not a claim that the grocery unit-pricing rules apply to tobacco. See the ACCC price-display guidance and Unit Pricing Code guidance.
The four-cell AUD worksheet
Copy the following fields from one live page at one point in time. Do not fill a missing field from a similarly named product or an old screenshot.
| Cell | Record from the live listing | Example notation |
|---|---|---|
| A | Displayed carton price in AUD | C |
| B | Number of packs in that sale unit | N |
| C | Cigarettes per pack, only if explicitly stated | M |
| D | Observation date and selected option | YYYY-MM-DD; exact option |
Use these formulas:
- Per-pack arithmetic equivalent:
C ÷ N - Total cigarettes in the carton:
N × M - Per-cigarette arithmetic equivalent:
C ÷ (N × M)
Round money to two decimal places for a reader-facing note, but retain the unrounded result in the working record if it will be reused. Always label the result “derived” or “calculated.” That single word prevents a calculation from being mistaken for a price displayed by the seller.
A worked example—illustrative, not a live offer
Suppose a fictional listing shows AUD 172 for one carton, and the same page says the carton contains 10 packs of 20 cigarettes. The arithmetic is:
- Per-pack equivalent:
172 ÷ 10 = AUD 17.20 - Carton count:
10 × 20 = 200 cigarettes - Per-cigarette equivalent:
172 ÷ 200 = AUD 0.86
AUD 17.20 is not a promise that a single pack can be purchased for that amount. AUD 0.86 is not a separately offered item price. Neither figure includes a delivery amount that can only be known after a destination or checkout choice is supplied. The numbers above are deliberately hypothetical; readers should start again with the current amount on the relevant CigPrice shop page.
A six-point error check before dividing
- Confirm the sale unit. “Carton,” “pack,” “bundle” and a quantity selector are not interchangeable. Use the wording beside the selected price.
- Confirm the exact option. A product family may contain several variants or quantities. Changing an option can change both the price and the divisor.
- Confirm the currency. The page should identify AUD. Do not treat a dollar symbol from an undated screenshot as proof of Australian dollars.
- Confirm the pack count. Never assume every carton contains the same number of packs. If the count is absent, leave the per-pack result unresolved.
- Time-stamp the observation. A current listing can change. Record the URL, date and time rather than describing the result as permanent.
- Separate delivery and checkout changes. Read the current CigPrice shipping policy and rely on the checkout for destination-dependent amounts.
This error check is intentionally narrow. It does not attempt to normalize historical records, foreign currencies, tax systems or promotional periods. Those cases require more context; use the separate different pack-size record method when the task is archival comparison rather than reading one live listing.
Copy-ready calculation card
Use this compact card whenever a price needs to be explained or checked:
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Canonical product URL | |
| Exact selected option | |
| Observed date and time | |
| Displayed currency | AUD |
Displayed sale-unit price (C) |
|
Packs in sale unit (N) |
|
Cigarettes per pack (M, if stated) |
|
Derived per-pack equivalent (C ÷ N) |
|
Derived per-cigarette equivalent (C ÷ (N × M)) |
|
| Delivery or mandatory charge known? | Yes / No / destination-dependent |
| Final checkout total |
If any input is unknown, write “unknown”; do not force a result. A blank calculation is more accurate than a precise-looking number built on an assumed carton size.
How to read a CigPrice result without creating a second offer
For a broad “cig price” or “cigarette prices” search, start with the current CigPrice listings and open the exact product option. The product page remains the source for its current displayed sale unit and amount. This article only explains how to annotate that information.
A good note reads: “Observed on 4 September 2026: the selected listing displayed AUD X for N packs; X ÷ N gives a derived per-pack equivalent of AUD Y. Check the live page and checkout for current terms.” A poor note reads: “Packs cost AUD Y,” because it silently turns a calculation into a sale claim.
Quick answers
Is the calculated per-pack amount a price for one pack? No. It is an arithmetic equivalent unless the live page separately offers a single pack at that price.
Can I divide by 10 without checking the listing? No. Ten is valid only when the selected sale unit explicitly contains 10 packs.
Should delivery be divided across packs? Keep product-price and checkout calculations separate. If you need a landed-order figure, record the confirmed checkout total and explain the destination and date.
Does a lower calculated figure mean a lower-risk product? No. Price arithmetic says nothing about exposure, safety or health risk.
Adult and health notice
This calculation guide is neutral information for adults of legal age. It does not promote tobacco use, confirm that an order can be accepted, or provide legal or financial advice. Editorial method, sources and policy check
Editorial check: Checked by the CigPrice editorial team against the sources listed on this page.
Method: The editorial team retested the price-per-pack worksheet, separating displayed carton price, pack count, delivery charge and final checkout total. ACCC pricing references and the site's current shop and shipping records already cited in the article were checked without treating the example calculation as a live offer.
Contact and policy check (4 September 2026): The current CigPrice contact page lists support@cigscope.com and WhatsApp +44 7366482114. The site’s own shipping and returns policy states delivery to all regions of Australia with an estimated delivery time of 3–5 business days. Applicable delivery charges are shown separately at checkout. Orders remain subject to payment confirmation, stock availability and any required adult age or identity verification. Unopened products may be returned or exchanged within 14 days of delivery if they remain sealed and in their original condition; customers must contact support before sending an item back. The policy states that it does not exclude rights that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Transparency limits: The pages checked did not provide or independently verify a legal operator name, physical or returns address, ABN, licence, specific payment provider, or medical, legal or other professional reviewer qualifications. The editorial check above is source verification only; it is not medical, legal or other professional review.
